The movie Zodiac is the movie to conclude my series, “What did I watch while on lockdown?”. This is the last movie I watched before the lockdown was lifted in France last May.

I mainly watched Zodiac because I’m fascinated by the human mind, and mostly by sick human minds, like serial killers. Like why does a fraction of humankind think it’s okay to torture, mutilate and scare people to death.

The Zodiac killer is one of the most famous serial killers, mostly because he’s one of the few known serial killers who was never caught. He was active during the late 60s and spread fear throughout the San Francisco valley. Some even consider him to be the American version of Jack the Reaper.

He was famous for writing and sending cryptic messages, giving out clues, and taking a sadistic pleasure in taunting the cops and the press. He claimed about thirty murders.

Robert Graysmith, a young and shy cartoonist, had neither the experience nor the connections of his famous and brilliant colleague, Paul Avery, a specialist in criminal cases for the San Francisco Chronicle. He didn’t have access to the information and testimonies that Detective David Toshi and his partner, Detective William Armstrong had. Nonetheless, the Zodiac case became the story of Robert’s life, in which he would spend ten years of labors and two books.

Or you can watch the trailer right here.

The first thing I have to say is, the movie was so weird to me for a particular reason. The three main characters are played by The Hulk, Iron Man, and Mysterio. I watched it two months ago and so I already knew them as other characters. So seeing them all normal and acting like they didn’t know each other was really weird. Having said that, I’m going to go ahead with the actual review of the movie Zodiac.

The movie is based on the non-fiction book that Robert Graysmith, one of the main characters, wrote about the Zodiac killings, which is the reason, so the film was so compelling. The dialogue, the characters, everything makes you feel like you’re not watching a movie. But you feel like you are intruding on someone’s personal life, even watching a documentary at some point.

And the fact that the movie is about the Zodiac killer is what makes the story even more thrilling. Even if you don’t know everything about the Zodiac killer, most people at least know that no one was ever arrested for the murders that he committed or at least claimed he did. But watching this movie, I almost forgot about this kind of significant fact. I felt like they were going to catch whoever was behind that mask and committed those murders. That is how good this movie is…

Plus, as I said before, the casting is just so great. All of them are such great actors!

Should you watch it?

Yes, you should absolutely watch it. First of all, so that you can show off and say that you watched a David Fincher. But also because of the story and the actors, actually everything about this movie. For the time being, it’s one of the films I most enjoyed watching this year.
